Goal setting may be the most proactive way to thwart boredom. Setting hourly goals will provide a sense of meaning to everything that you do, thus allowing for less time for the feeling of boredom to consume you. If you seek a purposeful existence, take steps to create an action list, taking into consideration everything you would like to complete within a specific timeframe. When you account for your time, you will learn to spend it wisely, and everything you do will begin to matter. Priorities will come into focus. On that note, it is often tempting to divert from that path should you find the routine monotonous. When that situation arises you then find begin looking for things to do when you’re bored.
Often, people become bored because, as members of the human race, we are naturally creatures of habit. We tend to stick to things that allow us to remain in our own comfort zone. When you are bored, challenge yourself to try something new. Maybe you are terrified to speak in public. Maybe you have never been skiing. Maybe you love the cake design reality show and would love to learn how to prepare and deliver such an artistically edible masterpiece. Whatever hidden passion you have, seek a learning experience and push past the uncomfortable unknown to develop a new skill. The more skills you are equipped with, hopefully the less time you will find yourself in the boredom pit.

Alternatively, you may be simply looking around your very own home for things to do when you’re bored. If this is the case, there are numerous things you can do. Try out a few new hairstyles. Read a book you have been interested in for some time. If you have a dog or a cat, drop what you’re doing and spend some time with the four-legged, furry friend. Organize your photo box, which has probably gotten out of control.

Create a bucket list. Call up or email a friend or family member with whom you have not spoken to in a long time. Empty your email inbox, not a fun task but when you’re bored it will at least allow you to accomplish something that needs to be done. Go do something that brings out your inner child; blow bubbles, or create a sidewalk chalk mural on your driveway. Ultimately if you just draw yourself out of the monotony, boredom will soon be a thing of the past.
